I have been a local Naturalist and Ornithologist since the age of 13.
My boyhood was spent in Croxley Green where I searched for birds nests in the woodlands and river valleys.

For example the River Chess where net and jam jar held such species as Bullhead and Lampern were common, not now I am afraid.
While wading Brown Trout and Grayling too were around our feet.
I left Croxley for Maple Cross and West Hyde it was there I quickly utilized the area of surrounding woodland and gravel pits as my naturalist playground.
Between 1976 and 1978 I Became passionate about birding helping to ring birds at Maple Cross Sewage Farm with boyhood friend Paul Trodd although my junior became an influence on my bird watching future.
I recorded for the B.T.O. and submitted records to Herts. NH Society and the Wildfowl Trust .West Hyde gravel pits held many species of ducks.
Eventually I became a warden for Herts and Middlesex Trust, then a bailiff for Stockers Lake which is special for me. The Y.O.C. also had my services when the children were younger.
The Seventies were the start of my travels, first Norfolk beckoned, a day trip with Paul Trodd twitching began the affair.

This resulted in another string to my bow i.e. poetry, a poem called Blakeney featured in Winter Tales a publication from Arrival Press in Peterborough.
I completed a Journal called The History and Birds of Maple Cross and West Hyde, this was well received by the local community and the villages aforementioned lie deep in my affection.
Foreign travel became infectious first Majorca and Minorca in the Balearics followed by the Coto Donana and the Danube Delta in fact most of Europe.
Camping in Iceland followed by a Kenyan safari in 1985, this probably inspired my wildlife journeys more than anything.

Dawn on Lake Nakuru has never been surpassed. Twenty years on sampling the delights of the natural world from the Nile to the Plains of the Mara has been the best education I could ever have.
